Byzantine Studies

  1. An average undergraduate degree score of 6.5 (very good/2.1) or above.
  2. Knowledge of at least one of the following languages at B2 level: English, French, German, Italian.

 Modern Greek Studies

  1. An average undergraduate degree score of 6.5 (very good/2.1) or above.
  2. Knowledge of at least one of the following languages at B2 level: English, French, German, Italian.

Adequate knowledge of foreign languages is certified by means of certificates from any recognized Greek or foreign institution. Candidates who cannot provide such documentation are asked to take a written language examination.

Successful candidates are selected by the following criteria:

Classics

Score in Specialisation Courses: 20%

  • Specialisation Courses are those relevant to Ancient Greek and Latin Texts, Ancient Greek and Roman History and Ancient Greek and Roman Civilisation up to Late Antiquity.

Interview: 50%

  • In addition to testing the candidate’s knowledge of history of classical literature, as defined in the Examination Materials (see below), comprehension in ancient Greek and Latin may be tested during the interview.

Foreign languages: 15% [English B2 and above: 5%, second/third/fourth foreign language 10%]

Average degree score: 10%

Writing/research activity: 5%

  • Writing and research activity includes a successful undergraduate dissertation or other undergraduate essays, general research activity, participation in research programmes, participation in Summer Schools, publications, participation in the Erasmus Programme etc.

Entry threshold: 60%

 

Byzantine Studies

Written examination: 30%

Average score in undergraduate specialisation courses: 20%

  • Specialisation courses are those relevant to Byzantine and Medieval Literary Studies and Byzantine Civilisation.

Interview: 20%

Foreign languages: 15% [English B2 and above 15%, second/third/fourth language: 10%]

Average degree score: 10%

Writing/research activity: 5%

  • Writing and research activity includes a successful undergraduate dissertation or other undergraduate essays, general research activity, participation in research programmes, participation in Summer Schools, publications, participation in the Erasmus Programme etc.

Entry threshold: 60%

 

Modern Greek Studies

Written examination: 30%

Score in specialisation courses: 20%

  • Specialisation courses are relevant to Modern Greek and European Literary Studies, Modern Greek and European Civilisation, Theory of Literature and Comparative Literature.

Interview: 20%

Foreign Languages: 15% [English B2 and above: 5%, second/third/fourth language 10%]

Average degree score: 10%

Writing/research activity: 5%

  • Writing and research activity includes a successful undergraduate dissertation or other undergraduate essays, general research activity, participation in research programmes, participation in Summer Schools, publications, participation in the Erasmus Programme etc.

The above selection criteria do not apply to Greek or foreign I.K.Y. scholarship holders, who are individually assessed on the terms and conditions of their scholarship. The Postgraduate Programme accepts one additional student from the National Scholarship Institution (I.K.Y.), who succeeded in the postgraduate competition in a subject area relevant to the Postgraduate Programme and one foreign scholarship holder of the Greek State. Foreign SOCRATES/ERASMUS students may occasionally participate in the Programme.

 

If tutors in a Postgraduate Programme believe a successful candidate needs support in core subjects, they may request obligatory attention of required undergraduate courses, with the agreement and license of the Postgraduate Studies Committee.

 

Scholarships

The Postgraduate Programme Studies in Classical, Byzantine and Modern Greek Literature offers scholarships or prizes to postgraduate students. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic record. Terms, obligations and rights of scholarship holders are stipulated by the Department of Philology.

 

Application

For the Postgraduate Programme Studies in Classical, Byzantine and Modern Greek Literature documentation is submitted electronically on the following application platform:

Application materials include:

 

  1. Application form (available from the platform), in which candidates will state their area of interest (Classics, Byzantine Studies, Modern Greek Studies). Candidates can only choose one area of study.

 

  1. Statement of interest, in which candidates will explain why they have chosen the specific programme.

 

  1. Curriculum Vitae

 

  1. Two letters of reference. If the candidate is a graduate from the Department of Philology at the University of Patras, they will name two members of teaching staff who have agreed to supply references.

 

  1. Copy of their degree certificate (with recognition from DOATAP for non-Greek universities)

 

  1. Transcript of Records

 

  1. Copy of undergraduate dissertation (if any) and electronic copies of publications

 

  1. Foreign language degree certificates, at at least B2 level (if these are not available, candidates may be asked to take a written language examination)

 

  1. A photocopy of identity card or passport

 

In the event of application before their degree award ceremony, applicants can supply, along with other application materials, a certificate of study completion. They are obliged to supply their degree certificate as soon as it becomes available.
