The Department of Philology of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Patras and the Department of European, American and Intercultural Studies of the School of Humanities and Philosophy of Sapienza University of Rome jointly organize and operate, from the academic year 2026–2027, an International / Inter-Institutional Postgraduate Programme (IIPP) entitled “Literary Citizenship, Public Sphere and Cultural Democracy”.

The proposed programme focuses on the education and specialization of postgraduate students in Modern Greek Literary Studies.

The International / Inter-Institutional Postgraduate Programme “Literary Citizenship, Public Sphere and Cultural Democracy” aims to promote an academic direction towards the specialization and training of new “cultural mediators”, enabling them to operate effectively by contributing to a productive model that places diversity, otherness, and hybridity at its core as resources for development, innovation, and creativity.

The necessity for establishing the proposed programme arises from a series of academic and professional reasons related to the modernization and internationalization of Modern Greek Literary Studies. In this context, the programme primarily examines the role of literature in the public sphere while combining it with applied skills. Therefore, the programme is situated within the field of Public and Applied Literary and Cultural Studies.

The central objective of the programme is to highlight the role of literature as an integral component of cultural mediation, understood as the ability to communicate across different “boundaries” or even conflicting concepts of culture.

Upon full and successful completion of the Programme of Studies, students are awarded a Master’s Degree (MSc) entitled “Literary Citizenship, Public Sphere and Cultural Democracy”.

The degree is jointly awarded by the Department of Philology of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Patras and the Department of European, American and Intercultural Studies of the School of Humanities and Philosophy of Sapienza University of Rome.

It is signed by the Rector of the University of Patras, the Rector of Sapienza University of Rome, the Chair of the Department of Philology of the University of Patras, the Chair of the Department of European, American and Intercultural Studies of Sapienza University of Rome, and the Secretary of the Department of Philology of the University of Patras.

The language of instruction and the language of the Master’s Thesis are English.

The duration of studies leading to the award of the Master’s Degree is defined as two (2) academic semesters, including the preparation and evaluation of the Master’s Thesis.

For participation in the Postgraduate Programme “Literary Citizenship, Public Sphere and Cultural Democracy”, postgraduate students are required to pay tuition fees amounting to: €2,800.
