Postgraduate Studies

Since 2018-2019 the Department of Greek Philology offers two Postgraduate Programmes:

        1. Studies in Classical, Byzantine and Modern Greek Literature

The Department of Philology offers a two-year, course-based Programme of Graduate Studies (PGS) in Greek Literature under the title “Studies in Classical, Byzantine and Modern Greek Literature”. The PGS leads to the acquisition of a Master’s degree (M.A.) in the following three areas of specialization:

  • Classics
  • Byzantine Literature
  • Modern Greek Literature

The aim of the PGS is to promote research in the relevant fields, to improve the skills of young scholars and enhance their professional expertise, and to develop disciplinary and interdisciplinary dialogue in Greece and abroad.

The PGS accepts graduates from all departments of Philosophy Faculties and relevant departments of Faculties of Humanities and Faculties of Social and Historical Studies in Greek Universities or equivalent departments in recognized universities abroad. An average degree score of 6.5/10 (“Very Good”) or equivalent is required.

Applicants are accepted/rejected on a merit-only basis calculated by means of the following criteria: written/oral examinations, average degree score, grades in relevant undergraduate courses, letters of recommendation, foreign languages, interview, undergraduate dissertation (optional but highly recommended), publications (optional). A maximal number of forty (40) successful applicants is distributed as follows:

  • fifteen (15) in Classics
  • ten (10) in Byzantine Literature
  • fifteen (15) in Modern Greek Literature

The PGS Steering Committee reserves the right to leave vacant places in any area of specialization if appropriately qualified candidates do not show up.

The minimal duration of study is four (4) semesters. A sum total of 120 ECTS is required for the completion of the PGS. Students have to attend and successfully meet the requirements (preliminary reading, tests, essays, examinations) of six (6) taught courses / seminars equally allocated in the first, second and third semesters. Each taught course / seminar meets three hours per week for thirteen (13) weeks and leads to the acquisition of 15 ECTS. Teaching is primarily in Greek but some seminars may be in English. In the fourth semester students are required to write a dissertation of 20,000-25,000 words which leads to the acquisition of 30 ECTS. The dissertation is supervised by a Faculty member and orally examined by a committee of three Faculty members (including the supervisor). Tuition fees amount to 1,500 Euros for the entire PGS, and they are payable in four instalments.
