Byzantine & Modern Greek Studies
The specialization in Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies (BMGS) consists of the sub-specialization of Byzantine Studies (BS) and the sub-specialization of Modern Greek Studies (MGS); it is staffed by a total of 8 (eight) faculty members.
The undergraduate study programme of the BMGS specialization, through a series of introductory and specialized courses, offers students academic training in the following fields of knowledge:
- Byzantine Philology (Byzantine Literature: History, Genres, Representatives; Metrics, Greek Palaeography, Translation of Byzantine Texts into Modern Greek)
- Byzantine History, Archaeology and Art
- Modern Greek Philology (History of Modern Greek Literature, Poetry, Prose, Literary Criticism, Periodical Press, Intellectual Movements and Literature, Literary Forms and Genres, Publishing, Metrics).
- Philology (Relations between Greek and European Literature, European Literary Trends and Movements).
- Theory and Criticism of Literature
- European History, Modern and Contemporary Greek History
The fields of knowledge of Modern Greek and Comparative Philology, as well as Literary Criticism and Theory, are cultivated more systematically and in greater depth within the framework of the postgraduate programme of the MGS sub-specialization.
The MGS sub-specialization also offers the possibility of pursuing a doctoral dissertation for scholars who choose to continue their studies at doctoral level.

Research Programmes
Faculty members of the BMGS Specialization have participated as Principal Investigators in the implementation of the following research programmes:
K. Karatheodori Programme, B 403 (December 2004 – November 2007) Study of the manuscript tradition and publication of unpublished and insufficiently edited Byzantine homiletic and hagiographical texts from manuscripts and papyri.
Institution: Research Committee of the University of Patras
Principal Investigator: Theodora Antonopoulou (currently elected to the School of Philosophy of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens)
Members: PhD candidates in Byzantine Philology of the Department
The programme aims at the publication of critical editions of selected hagiographical and homiletic texts, as well as related studies; the collection of material for the creation of a Clavis of Byzantine authors of hagiographical and homiletic texts from the middle and late Byzantine periods; and the development of a continuously enriched database including a catalogue of unpublished or insufficiently edited hagiographical and homiletic texts of the early Byzantine period.
EPEAEK II, “Tilephaessa” Programme, B.Y.P., “Cosmopolis” Collection (2002–2006). Modern Greek literary and philological journals of the period 1834–1931: Research, digitization, and online dissemination of nineteen journals in complete series.

The programme focused on the research, completion, and online dissemination of old and rare journals. The creation of the Digital Collection “Cosmopolis” was carried out in collaboration with the Central Library of the University of Patras and the Hellenic Literary and Historical Archive (ELIA). The Collection, addressed to the entire academic community, primarily targets fourth-year students of the Department within the framework of the course “Milestones of the Periodical Press.” Graduates of the Department from the BMGS Specialization participated in the Working Group for the implementation of the Programme.

The Figure of Cassandra in Ancient and Modern Greek Literature.

Principal Investigator: Katerina Kostiou
The Programme aims to identify and study the figure of Cassandra in Ancient and Modern Greek Literature, from Homer’s Iliad to contemporary poetry and prose. The programme funded the doctoral dissertation of our Department’s graduate, Ms Dimitra Giotopoulou.
