Classics is an internationally esteemed academic subject: for many centuries ancient Greek and Latin texts provided the linguistic and cultural vehicle for the circulation of ideas, as well as for scientific, literary and artistic innovation.<\/p>\n<p>The study programme in Classics at the Department of Philology in Patras offers a range of core and optional courses which provide students with the required linguistic background and introduce them to contemporary methodological approaches for understanding the complexities of ancient Greek and Latin sources.<\/p>\n<p>Study of ancient Greek and Latin literature requires knowledge of history and philosophy, papyrology, epigraphy, palaeography, as well as anthropology, sociology and the study of myth and religion. These subject areas allow investigation of the social and historical conditions necessary for the systematic study of the ancient world. The members of Classics in Patras pursue these study areas through research projects and specialised laboratories, such as the Laboratory for the Study of Myth and Religion in Ancient Greek and Roman Antiquity.<\/p>\n<p>For those who wish to pursue postgraduate study or a PhD, Classics in Patras offers a wide range of postgraduate courses in the above research areas.
