The Classics Section of the Department of Philology at the University of Patras (Greece), is pleased to announce an international conference on Greek Satyr Play, which will be held on 1-3 July 2016 (Friday to Sunday), at the Conference and Cultural Centre of the University. The aim of this conference is to shed more light on this fascinating but least known genre of Greek Drama. We will host scholars from various disciplines (textual and literary criticism, papyrology, linguistics, archaeology, theatre studies, social anthropology etc.), who will have the opportunity to discuss all recent developments in our understanding of Satyr Play and present new findings.

The papers will cover the following subject areas:

a) The genre
b) The Cyclops of Euripides
c) The fragmentary plays (of the ‘Triad’, as well of the minor poets)
d) The ancient secondary sources (testimonia, didascalic inscriptions, etc.)
e) The representation of satyrs and of satyr plays in vase-paintings

Organising Committee:
Menelaos M. Christopoulos (Professor of Ancient Greek Literature)
Andreas P. Antonopoulos (Carathéodory Postdoctoral Researcher in Classics)
