The postgraduate program “Studies in Classical, Byzantine, and Modern Greek Literature” of the Department of Philology, University of Patras, leads to the award of a Master’s Degree (MA) in the following academic fields: 1. Classics, 2. Byzantine Literature, 3. Modern Greek Literature.

The MA program is limited to a total of forty (40) participants distributed as follows: up to fifteen (15) in Classics, up to ten (10) in Byzantine Literature, and up to fifteen (15) in Modern Greek Literature.

Graduates, who have received a BA Degree in the Humanities, Arts, Social, and Historical Studies (e.g., the Department of Theater Studies and the Department of Philosophy of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Patras, the Department of History and Anthropology at the University of Thessaly, etc.) from a Greek university or equivalent recognized institutions abroad, as well as graduates of Technical Educational Institutions (TEI) in the same subjects, are eligible for application to the MA program.

The minimum duration of studies is four (4) academic semesters, including the time required for the completion of the MA thesis. The total number of ECTS Credit Units required for the acquisition of the MA is 120. The courses may be taught in Greek and/or English. To obtain an MA Degree students must successfully attend and be examined in a total of six (6) semester courses during the first three semesters (i.e., 2 courses in the 1st semester, 2 in the 2nd semester, and 2 in the 3rd semester) and successfully complete an MA thesis in the 4th semester.

Formal qualifications per academic fields for graduates to be accepted as candidates for the MA program are as follows:

Adequate knowledge of the foreign language is normally proven through relevant language certificates issued by officially recognized national or international language institutions (e.g. Cambridge Proficiency, Michigan etc.). If the candidate does not have the required language certificate the election committee may accept other proof of the necessary language skills (e.g. by oral examination).

SELECTION CRITERIA

The list of successful candidates is reached using the following coefficients:

Note: The average grade of specialized courses of the last two years of the syllabus is based on the following algorithm: AGCC * NCC / MNCC

[AGCC = average grade of specialized courses completed by the time of application, NCC = number of specialized courses completed by the time of application, MNCC = maximum number of specialized courses required for obtaining the BA Degree in the relevant field].

    1. Average grade of specialized courses of the last two years of the syllabus: 20%. Specialized courses include Ancient Greek and Latin Literature, Ancient Greek and Roman History, and Ancient Greek and Roman Civilization until the Late Antique period.
    2. Interview: 50%. In addition to the philological data of classical literature, as defined by the contents of the entry examination (see below), the interview assesses candidates’ knowledge of ancient Greek and Latin languages.
    3. First foreign language: English or French or German or Italian at least at the B2 level: 5%
    4. Second foreign language: 10%
    5. Overall bachelor’s degree grade: 10%
    6. Writing/research activity: 5%. Writing/research activity includes performance in a thesis or other undergraduate essays, general research activity, and other qualifications such as participation in research programs, summer schools, Erasmus student exchange programs, publications, etc.

    Total minimum for eligibility: 60%

    1. Written examinations: 30%

    Total mininum for elegibility: 60%

If the academic section (Classics, Byzantine Literature, Modern Greek Literature) deems it necessary that an otherwise successful candidate needs further basic instruction in particular subjects, they may ask the candidate to attend the required undergraduate courses, with the consent and approval of the section committee concerned.

FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS

Exchange Students who spend part of their studies in Patras within the framework of European Exchange Programs and Memoranda of Cooperation between the University of Patras and academic institutions of other countries, such as ERASMUS+ etc. (according to the provisions of bilateral agreements and current legislation) are allowed to participate in MA courses as regular or occasional, supranumerous participants under the terms set by the instructor.

TUITION FEES

The Master’s program “Studies in Classical, Byzantine, and Modern Greek Literature” does not have tuition fees.

SUBMITTING THE APPLICATION

  1. Application Form (available on the platform) in which candidates must specify the academic field of interest (only one of the three offered fields of the Master’s program).
  2. Statement of Goals: A one-page memorandum justifying and substantiating the candidate’s intention to enroll in the specific specialization of the Master’s program.
  3. Curriculum Vitae.
  4. Two Recommendation Letters. If the candidate received his or her BA degree from the Department of Philology at the University of Patras, they should provide the names of professors who have agreed to write a recommendation letter, if requested.
  5. Copy of the Degree (with recognition from the Hellenic National Academic Recognition and Information Center (= DOATAP), where applicable) indicating the overall grade, which must be at least “Very Good” (7/10 on the Greek scale, B on the ECTS scale).
  6. Transcript of Records.
  7. Copy of the Β.Α. thesis (if applicable) and any publications in electronic or print format.
  8. Certificate(s) of foreign language proficiency at least at B2 level (if not available, candidates may be asked to prove their language proficiency through a written or oral examination).
  9. Copy of the Identity Card.
