The Department of Philology is dedicated to excellence in both teaching and research. Its primary mission is to provide high-quality education in the fields it serves, to cultivate critical thinking and academic skills, and to equip students with the knowledge, competencies, and professional skills required to meet the challenges of contemporary academic and professional environments.

For more than twenty-five years, the Department has developed a strong record of educational and research activities, including undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, conferences, workshops, summer schools, and collaborations with distinguished scholars and institutions from around the world. Particular emphasis is placed on student-centred learning, innovative teaching practices, close interaction between students and faculty, and the integration of research into the learning experience. These efforts are continuously supported by the University of Patras’ Centre for Teaching and Learning (ΚΕΔΙΜΑ), which promotes pedagogical innovation, teaching excellence, and the professional development of academic staff.

The Department’s graduates pursue successful careers in education, culture, publishing, public administration, and other professional sectors, while many continue their studies at leading universities in Europe and the United States or participate in international research and educational programmes. A significant number of alumni have gone on to academic careers in Greece and abroad.

At the same time, the Department maintains active collaborations with numerous international universities and promotes the mobility of students and staff through the Erasmus+ programme, fostering an international academic environment, intercultural exchange, and academic cooperation across borders.
